Students love playing Kahoot. We use it each week to review our social studies skills.
13:44 - Sheri Edwards
That's fine; just figuring out how Kahoot works. Good to see you can have thoughtful questions with discussion.
13:45 - Peggy George
You can follow along with Laura's presentation on her special Livebinder (part of our big Livebinder today) http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=2054710 (Laura’ Livebinder with all of her resources)

13:51 - stidmama

13:54 - Peggy George
Hi Stidmama! Great to see you!
14:04 - Peggy George
Welcome back Dave :-)
14:39 - Peggy George
there is such a tendency to ask recall questions in geography/social studies.
14:49 - stidmama
Already <3 this!
14:54 - Dave #2
Great topic ,thanks
15:13 - Peggy George
If you have questions for Laura as we go along please type them here in the chat and we'll ask them on the mic during Q/A
16:07 - Peggy George
you can even incorporate geography in physical education :-)
16:23 - stidmama
I use a short period in my day to use content-area learning... which IS part of the required curriculum (just not tested)
16:35 - @bcdtech Maureen
Pop geography questions into a breakoutedu
17:02 - Peggy George
This is the Connecticut social studies framework: https://ccsspublicaffairs.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/ctsocialstudiesframeworks2015.pdf
17:07 - Dave #2
Is it useful to incorporate geo skills into others subjects or assignments?
17:21 - stidmama
I don't get as much in as I wish I did... but I do at least once use a WA state CBA for exploration.
17:27 - Peggy George
that's a great way to do it @stidmama!
17:54 - Peggy George
very helpful to see question examples!
18:13 - Peggy George
notice that these great questions start with why/how and not where :-)
20:36 - Peggy George
this would be a great opportunity for students to do recorded interviews with their grandparents :-)
20:43 - Peggy George
Welcome Sandra!
21:03 - Peggy George
mashup maps
21:10 - stidmama

23:39 - Peggy George
Love that control question! can spark a lot of conversation!
23:42 - @bcdtech Maureen
Uconn magic looks like an excellent resource. Would love to have the kids in my school look at our little piece of the Conn River Valley over time- lots of changes that I have seen in the last 40 years.
24:13 - Dave #2
We use google earth pro a lot, it's free and images of study areas.

Are there other open source global data bases similar to Gapminder?
32:39 - Sheri Edwards
Years ago I noticed students had no clue where they were in relation to even the nearest large city, so I purchased a huge US wall map and the custodian put it up in the hallway to our gym and students are always gathering around it now to find where places are and where we live. It's amazing what one giant map can do.
33:16 - Peggy George
when you're exploring Laura's Livebinder be sure to check out all of the sub-tabs! The Resource link is loaded with all of these resources she is pointing out. http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=2054710

Sheri, that's true for adults too! Amazing when people are stopped on the street and asked if they know where Syria is (example). No clue!
34:15 - Peggy George
Terrific stidmama! I'll add that to our Livebinder!
35:59 - John Dupuis 2
With Google Earth evolving as the technology advances, what would be recommended as a good up-to-date resource to learn how to get the most out of GE in the classroom?
36:06 - @bcdtech Maureen

I found out the other day when I was writing about using maps in the classroom for a quick blog post, that my school blocks Google Maps. I got the IT to turn it on- but only for teachers. Apparently it is not part of GAFE.
44:25 - Peggy George

This is just a general blog post I did the other day... more about using maps vs geography http://hadleytechtuesday.weebly.com/blog/maps-in-the-classroom
46:19 - Peggy George
That's amazing Maureen!! Why would your school agree to unblock it for teachers and not students?
46:21 - Anne-Louise
Wow, did Laura create this binder? So when I share with colleagues, I credit her?
46:37 - Wes Fryer @wfryer

49:19 - stidmama

Synthesize information in one easy-to-use map that places text, pictures, audio files, video files, and much more in one central location. Organized by subject matter and specific age groups. Many exemplars for lessons and units.)
51:43 - @bcdtech Maureen
@Peggy- It was a GAFE thing ... age related. The IT guy quoted something, sent to super... think I am out of luck.
51:43 - Ben
thanks

You can even use PokemonGo for geography! http://www.diaryofatechiechick.com/2016/08/mapping-your-town-or-area-via-pokemon.html (Katie Ann Wilson: Mapping Your Town or Area via Pokemon Go for Education)
52:55 - @bcdtech Maureen
@Peggy- so I think I have to jump thru hoops:
53:06 - @bcdtech Maureen
Here's the thing: Google My Maps is an Additional Service not covered by your organization’ Google Apps for Education agreement. Most Additional Services are governed by the Google Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and some have service-specific terms. Our Google Apps for Education Privacy Notice describes how Google collects and uses information for Apps for Education accounts. You can learn more about the differences between Core and Additional Services in our Help Center.
If you have end users under the age of 18, your institution is required under its Google Apps agreement to get parental consent before allowing these users to use Google My Maps. More information your institution can share with students and parents about Google’ services and privacy practices is available in our Help Center.
You acknowledge and agree that you will comply with all laws and regulations apply to your provision of Google My Maps to your end users, including, as applicable, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
53:52 - Peggy George
That's why Alice Christie chose to use Google Maps in her GoogleTreks--far less bandwidth than Google Earth
54:09 - Susie @shighley
Isn't it true that blogger falls under that too, not officially part of GAFE?
