CLASSROOM 2.0 LIVE webinar with special guest presenter, Mike Marotta, "Assistive Technology for Struggling Readers".
September 24, 2016
00:02 - Peggy George
I'm not currently working with students but I never had a class that didn't have students who struggle with reading!
00:03 - stidmama
I was also trying to talk with my son, missed "voting" (sigh)
00:18 - Peggy George
smiling stidmama!!!
00:42 - Lorie Moffat
yes
00:51 - Peggy George
Follow Mike on Twitter: https://twitter.com/mmatp
01:24 - Oronoque Westland
A problem at uni level is that we do not interact very much with the students (maybe 2 hours a week) so harder to detect reading challenges
01:39 - Peggy George
I got to hear Mike present on an edWeb webinar recently and was so excited about what he had to share that I couldn't wait to ask him to come and share with us! He said YES :-)
01:53 - stidmama
Thank you for bringing him to us, Peggy!
01:57 - Peggy George

02:23 - Peggy George
See why I'm so excited to have him here! What an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience!!!
02:37 - Peggy George
Hi Eileen! Welcome!
02:54 - Oronoque Westland
hearing two voices
02:56 - Eileen
Hello Peggy😌
02:57 - Peggy George
That was a terrific intro Maureen! Thanks!
03:16 - Lorie Moffat
There were 2 mics on, not any more, though.
03:24 - Peggy George
If you're hearing two voices I wonder if you have two windows open? Only one person speaking.
04:00 - Peggy George
UDL (Universal Design for Learning) is for ALL and not just students with special needs!
05:05 - Peggy George
My favorite UDL resource: http://udltechtoolkit.wikispaces.com/ (UDL Toolkit)
05:20 - Peggy George
Hi John z! Welcome! Great to have you here!
06:09 - Peggy George
If you have any questions for Mike please type them here in the chat. Lorie will get on the mic to ask Mike during Q/A.
06:10 - Lorie Moffat
I'm capturing questions, Mike, to ask at the end.

07:30 - Peggy George
love that explanation!!
07:36 - stidmama
THIS HELPS!!!!! :-D
07:48 - @bcdtech Maureen
I did a test last year to see if different reading accomodations helped kids- both on iep and non iep students- UPAR... and more than 80% of the kids improved more than 1 grade level with auditory support. Not ust for kids who struggle- almost all the kids improved.
08:07 - Peggy George
that's impressive Maureen!!!
08:46 - Peggy George
but all of us can benefit from AT tools :-)
09:02 - @bcdtech Maureen
@Peggy- had one boy -6ht grader who read below grade level- tested out at 10th grade level- comprehension (not decoding) with auditory support
09:10 - Peggy George
wow!!!!!
09:24 - Oronoque Westland
"disability" has a legal definition, but ALL of us have some sort of challenge
09:37 - stidmama
I see that sort of thing in our classroom, too -- it's amazing how the "slow" kids are often just having to jump higher than the average ones.
09:47 - Peggy George
Assistive technology is also really valuable or senior citizens who struggle with vision and auditory issues as they age :-)
10:31 - Peggy George
excellent point Oronoque!!
11:07 - Peggy George
the selection (choice) is so important for students to take charge of their own learning!
11:14 - stidmama
I needed accommodations to read my textbooks for my master's -- magnifiers in the library, audiobooks, big print... so that's was what I was doing! (aha moment)
11:29 - Peggy George
https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/assistive-technology/assistive-technologies-basics/assistive-technology-for-reading (Understood: Assistive Technology for Reading)
11:55 - @bcdtech Maureen
:)
12:04 - Peggy George
me too @stidmama! I keep a magnifying glass right on my desk for things that aren't online :-)
12:33 - Peggy George
Here's our Livebinder link for today with all of Mike's resources in case you missed it. http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=2060427
12:35 - Oronoque Westland
how much technology just sits on the shelf? at my univ they buy things, but do not send out a notice to all faculty that the things are available

http://www.joyzabala.com/Documents.html (Joy Zabala SETT documents-S = Student/Skills, E = Environment, T = Tasks, T = Tools)
13:10 - Peggy George
so true and so sad Oronoque!
13:38 - stidmama
I had to go looking (after a note from my doctor documenting my needs) at the college. It's not always obvious.
13:59 - Patricia Smeyers
That is a great way to look at it. Very effective.
15:19 - Peggy George
these reading skills need to be taught at many grade levels (even into HS) and many teachers think it's only in the early grades.
15:50 - Peggy George
Great question!! Are the tools helping with these areas? Identify the skill/need and then pick the tool. :-)
15:57 - stidmama
Yes, I was having to teach phonemic awareness in LAP reading in middle school! The kids had no idea what sounds they were even making when they spoke
16:08 - Peggy George
Exactly!!!!
16:34 - Peggy George
I love being able to magnify the text on my Kindle for easier reading!

25:59 - @bcdtech Maureen
It depends on the student
26:01 - Cindy Medeiros
I'm late!
26:10 - @bcdtech Maureen
Some kids like the robotic voice better
26:11 - Peggy George
no worries Cindy! We're so glad you're here!

but I have the data- uPAR
26:58 - Peggy George
amazing! :-)
27:46 - Peggy George
love the idea that kids don't have to get bogged down and stop trying because they have these tools to support them
27:47 - Cindy Medeiros
love that Apple has so many accessibility options!
27:55 - Peggy George
I agree Cindy!!!
28:34 - Peggy George
If you have any questions for Mike as we go along please type them in the chat & Lori will ask him in Q/A
28:44 - @bcdtech Maureen
Speek screen can make you crazy- there are so many things on the screen that you do NOT want to have to listen to
28:55 - Oronoque Westland
at univ students are given many pdf files to read. Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (which is free) has text to speech.
28:58 - Cindy Medeiros
or things it won't read!
29:12 - stidmama
oronque, I didn't know that! Thanks for the info
29:32 - Peggy George
I have Reader DC and didn't realize that Cindy! Thanks!

31:08 - @bcdtech Maureen
Voice Dream reader is probably the best app I have seen. So many things you can control and the import from varous sources is critical. But it may be more than a student needs. SETT( tools come last)

31:36 - @bcdtech Maureen
I love Learning Ally- easy to use- Has a chrome extension as well
31:58 - stidmama
Learning Ally needs several weeks to several months' notice for texts they don't already have in stock. Many common titles are instantly available. It's a great service.
32:15 - Peggy George
so happy to know more about Learning Ally!!
32:17 - Patti Ruffing
I have used http://www.storylineonline.net/ with the closed captioning for my grandson who is learning to read
32:31 - Peggy George
great link Patti! Thanks!
32:42 - @bcdtech Maureen
@stidmama A lot of the textbooks are only on bookshare, but LA has great fiction as well as a growing collection of non fiction text
32:50 - Peggy George
it's also great for non-English speaking students!
33:01 - Peggy George
http://donjohnston.com/par/ (Don Johnston: Protocol for accommodations in reading-PAR)
33:16 - Cindy Medeiros
It has to be digital text (OCR) for Voice Dream. I had a student who was trying to use it with a scanned in PDF (a picture basically) and it didn't work. Need to make sure the teachers understand this
33:36 - Peggy George
thanks for that tip Cindy!
34:35 - @bcdtech Maureen
@Cindy- I have a scanner that foes the OCR automatically. And Google drive- when you upload a pdf- does the "image" and does the text as well.
34:41 - @bcdtech Maureen
does

35:16 - Peggy George

36:47 - @bcdtech Maureen
I highly recommend that each school has a Fujitsu ScanSnap Document Scanner or something similar. It automatically does OCR and scans right to my google drive (has other places you can choose too). A little pricey- but sooo worth it!

37:01 - stidmama
I remember that webinar, it would be nice to see what else she has discovered.
37:24 - Peggy George
Mike there is a note on top of that link that says "The Readability bookmarking service will be shutting down on September 30, 2016." Wonder if this is just for the browser or if it applies to the extension too?
37:58 - Peggy George
maybe it's just for the browser?
38:10 - Peggy George
sure hope we don't lose it!!!!
38:33 - Peggy George
incredibly helpful to remove the distractions!!
38:51 - Peggy George
Does the Clearly Chrome extension do something similar?
39:05 - Peggy George
Welcome Kim!!
39:10 - @bcdtech Maureen
I think it's just shutting down the export to Kindle or the other sources
39:22 - @bcdtech Maureen
Clearly is gone now
39:53 - Peggy George
thanks Maureen!
39:59 - Peggy George
Welcome Suzanne!!

40:36 - @bcdtech Maureen
As far as I know readabiltiy the clean up the page piece will remain- but bookmarking/save the artice is going away- but not positive- just how I am interpreting it.
41:01 - @bcdtech Maureen
If you use the "reader view" in iOS you also get the clean page
41:22 - Peggy George
Eric Curts has a great blog post about Clearly going away with alternatives. http://www.controlaltachieve.com/2016/01/clearly-alternatives.html

awesome to know!!
42:17 - @bcdtech Maureen
"If you don’ use the bookmarking service but you’e run into the Readability feature where other apps, like Tweetbot or Reeder, strip the ads and images from a web site to simplify it, don’ worry, the Readability Parser will continue to exist."
42:36 - Peggy George
whew Maureen!!! Thanks!
43:18 - Oronoque Westland
I wish my univ had a program where the students get to keep the devices and AT, not just borrow them. They need to have access to these tools at home and after graduating. I teach at a public univ and many of the students cannot afford to purchase tech equipment,
43:36 - Oronoque Westland
Great to know about the free and low cost tech.
43:38 - Peggy George
Would you also consider something like Newseum as assistive technology because it provides content for different reading abilities?

44:24 - Patricia Smeyers
I definitely have to talk my district into adding these resources to our technology. Especially the Chrome Apps.
44:28 - Patti Ruffing
I live Newsela for providing articles at different reading levels
44:36 - Patti Ruffing
*like
44:36 - @bcdtech Maureen
That quote re readability is from http://lifehacker.com/readability-is-shutting-down-heres-how-to-export-your-1786054002 Instapaper sounds like an alternative for folks who export out and like to read it later. I used to "read it later", but later never comes.
44:44 - Cindy Medeiros
Newsela
45:00 - Peggy George
So important Oronoque!! The ownership/full time access to the devices rather than borrowing would make such a difference!
45:55 - Peggy George
and software gets outdated so quickly and requires replacement on all of the computers!
46:05 - @bcdtech Maureen
Newsela, Tween Tribune and more sites are now offering varied lexile levels for kids.
46:22 - Oronoque Westland
Some of these tools are useful for students at commuter schools too. They spend hours on trains, buses, etc. that could be used for study time with the right tool.
46:29 - @bcdtech Maureen
The whole new way of budgeting is very hard for schools.
46:37 - Peggy George
I was thinking of Newsela when I said Newseum. Thanks Maureen!

It's still half price thru tomorrow I think
50:13 - Cindy Medeiros
I love Book Creator, great for kids to use to write too

55:08 - Peggy George
This has been awesome, helpful information! Thank you so much Mike!
55:18 - Rosemary Garcia
Actually,
55:21 - stidmama
I have to think and explore before I get to the questions.
55:24 - Rosemary Garcia
it was excelelnt and so informative
55:34 - Peggy George
Would you also consider something like Newsela as assistive technology because it provides content for different reading abilities
55:41 - Doug Henry in San Leandro, CA
What do you think the impact of Artificial Intelligence on LD will be?
55:42 - Cindy Medeiros

56:06 - Rosemary Garcia
And just writing things down to keep up. Probably questions will come up after checking out all these resources. What a wealth of very useful information! Thank You. Will be able to use and apply right away
56:19 - stidmama
@Cindy - archives to the show will be posted very quickly
56:28 - Peggy George
great questions Doug and Patricis and Russel! Thanks!
57:00 - @bcdtech Maureen
@Russel- at least for my students- voice typing on google docs is great... no training needed. It jsut plain works.
57:02 - Peggy George
Yes Cindy! This is being recorded and will be available later today. I'll add the recording to the Livebinder.
57:10 - Cindy Medeiros
Thanks stidmama
57:32 - Cindy Medeiros
Great Thanks, Peggy
57:55 - Peggy George
sometimes the kids need to try the tools before they know if they really will help them or not
58:03 - Russel
thanks...partly tried that...
58:11 - @bcdtech Maureen
If you do some "feature matching" ahead of time. then pick one of 2 things to try. Trials are important, but they need to be informed
58:21 - Peggy George
love that tip Maureen!!
58:33 - Russel
this has been a really good session thank you
59:05 - Peggy George
would you consider Siri assistive technology? :-)
59:15 - Jo
Google Voice Typing Tool works so well!
59:33 - @bcdtech Maureen
If you use specialize vocab - like medical or legal- then you may need Dragon or something that can learn from your speech...
59:34 - Russel
Thanks Mike
59:56 - Peggy George
Siri is getting so much better!!
1:00:00 - Cindy Medeiros
Yes, Google voice input works much better than Siri, although I love Apple
1:00:07 - @bcdtech Maureen
@Jo- I love voice typing. Even little kid voices are rcognized
