@Mark: I hope you will re-acquaint the Classroom 2.0 community with your new work...I am truly thrilled. Just trained a bunch of Bflo teachers on smart differentiated research skills for elementary students, and intro'd them to
SweetSearch.
09:36 - Mark Moran
Syliva Duckworth's art work is fabulous. She's a remarkable person.
09:42 - Peggy George
that's a terrific sketchnote!
10:26 - Peggy George

13:40 - Kg
I think that's a good point, Mark. Taking that one step further, I think it is so important that TEACHERS do it first with each other...to catch the fever :)

I have 26 third graders and we used 2 kits. I broke the student up into 8 groups. More boxes would be nice but it worked with 2.

I do think that the prep for the facilitator should not be ignored. Does Adam have advice for the startup facilitator, on time, etc., to prep?
30:03 - @jackiegerstein
Here's one I created to show the entire process Eggbert, the Slightly Cracked Egg: A Breakout EDU Game https://usergeneratededucation.wordpress.com/2016/09/04/eggbert-the-slightly-cracked-egg-a-breakout-edu-game/

30:12 - Patti Harju 1
You can run a game with a whole class and one kit. They work in small groups and take turns on the locks. Having more kits is nice, but it will work with one kit.
30:20 - Peggy George
awesome Jackie!!! I'll add that link to our Livebinder :-)
30:25 - @jackiegerstein
thanks Peggy

30:48 - Kg
@Jackie: Cannot wait to look at yours.
30:56 - @jackiegerstein
thanks Kg
31:21 - @plnaugle (Paula)
I have one box and set up stations for my students in groups when we play BreakoutEDU. Some stations give them a "red herring" instead of a clue to one of the locks so I can have 8 stations going at one time.
31:50 - Patti Ruffing
Patti, thanks, I am wondering about using it with a class of 35
31:57 - @jackiegerstein
One of my clues had to do with longitude and latitude - great way to teach my gifted students about it as they were motivated to learn to solve their clues
31:58 - Peggy George
great idea Paula!
32:00 - Kg
@Paula: Would love to know more about how the 8 groups work on a common problem.
32:17 - Doug Henry - San Leandro, CA
Is there any way for a group of online students to play BreakoutEDU? Or perhaps an online alternative to BreakoutEDU?
32:32 - Peggy George
be sure to join the Facebook community for tons of ideas and resources!!

33:05 - stidmama
This looks like a LOT of fun.
33:36 - Kg
That is a telling quote and goes to the soul of teaching and learning.
33:39 - @plnaugle (Paula)
@kg Each group has a slip of paper where they record the combinations for the locks. To win they have to have opened each lock and collected the right number of red herrings to be the winners of the game.
33:40 - Tina S
@Doug - There are a few digital games http://www.breakoutedu.com/digital/
33:49 - Peggy George
If any of you would like to take the mic to share experiences or ask questions please raise your hand.
34:11 - Mirzi
THANKS, GREAT IDEA
34:13 - Peggy George
thanks Tina!!
35:03 - Patti Harju 1
@Patti Ruffing 35 is a large group and having more than one kit would help the game flow. You might also run games where each group only works on one lock, the game would be shorter. Or you can do the small groups, they keep track of lock combos and you could have extra copies of the clues available.
35:08 - Peggy George
We'll give you mic permissions if you'd like to share!!! Raise your hand! We'd love to hear from you!
35:15 - Adam Bellow
Hey Patti!
35:20 - Kg
@Adam: Thank you! Scaffolding :)
35:31 - Patti Harju 1
Hey Adam!
35:57 - Mark Moran
Have students created many Breakout games?
36:04 - Tina S
Here is a blog post that I wrote about doing it with my 3rd graders for the first time with my 3rd grade. There are a few photos too. http://mrstinaschmidt.edublogs.org/2016/09/10/our-first-breakout-edu-game/
36:13 - Peggy George
What are some examples of teachers using BreakoutEDU for professional development? Would love some examples!
36:34 - Peggy George
Thank you Tina! I'll add your links to the Livebinder!!! :-)
36:40 - Louise @mrsmorgansclass #3
Thanks for sharing, Tina!
37:01 - Kg
@Mark: I am committed to having my college freshmen build some this fall. Instead of me trying to gamify for them, I want to capture their talents (after we do a few that others have built).
37:09 - Peggy George
Has anyone used DonorsChoose to purchase kits?
37:24 - Tina S
Hi Louise! Thanks for posting the link for this in the Facebook group today!
37:32 - Louise @mrsmorgansclass #3
Sure!
37:44 - Kati Searcy 2
A teacher at my school got her kits through Donors Choose
37:46 - Therese
Thanks for clarifying the class size issue.

haha Kati! :-)
39:15 - Marie Gatz 3
Is there a central place of clue creation ideas that has been curated? I have read so many amazing ideas, but am having a hard time documenting these ideas - it has tough to keep up with, but I want to add more creativity to my clues.

42:06 - Mark Moran
Have you considered any extensions of this, i.e. creating educational scavenger hunts, Amazing Races, etc.?
42:18 - Louise @mrsmorgansclass #3
We are 1:1 Chromebooks and use textbooks very little, but our 7th grade TX history teacher created one where they had to use textbooks to find clues instead of Google.
43:19 - Patti Harju 1
Hi !
43:27 - Louise @mrsmorgansclass #3
8th grade math students created math games for 6th/7th graders at the beginning of the year and one of the teams created a breakout.
43:29 - Patti Harju 1
There are several Pinterest Boards.
43:49 - Marie Gatz 3
At the secondary level, what has been the best avenue to get students from sharing too much information across periods? That has been a struggle.
44:03 - Kg
@Peggy: Speaking of Spark, has there been a Classroom 20 session on Spark?
44:08 - Louise @mrsmorgansclass #3
I think my biggest challenge is creating the games. It can be time-consuming.
44:25 - Kg
@Marie: Great question.
44:49 - Patti Harju 1
This is the Pinterest Board I usually visit/contribute too. Kari has been collecting here fro quite a while.https://www.pinterest.com/kariaug/breakout-edu/

Why make it easy for the next group when you did all the work?
46:03 - Sharon Gullett
If you buy a box, do get access to more games than what is posted on the website?
46:47 - @jackiegerstein
I work with gifted elementary students at two different schools - I like to have them compete for fastest time - it just adds a little element of fun and competition.
47:02 - Peggy George
@kg we haven't had a session dedicated to Spark but it has been shared quite a few times.
47:31 - Kg
@Peggy: AOK. TY
47:47 - Peggy George
Thanks everyone for sharing your links! I'll add them to the Livebinder after the show. :-)
47:57 - Peggy George
Anyone else want to take the mic to share?
48:02 - Patti Harju 1
We also encourage teachers to create their own games to better fit their classroom and curriculum.
48:31 - Peggy George
Kim, I love that BreakoutEDU Livebinder! Thanks!

:)
52:05 - @plnaugle (Paula)
Thanks everyone.
52:29 - Peggy George
I've heard that it has been used at school board meetings. That would be an awesome experience!!
52:34 - @plnaugle (Paula)
Hi Kati. Have you done a game with your students? Tale the mic and share with us.
52:59 - Peggy George
that's perfect! learn about the game while you're learning the content for PD!
53:00 - Therese
Great idea! That's an idea for our next staff meeting :o)
53:39 - @plnaugle (Paula)
Our last game last year lead to our end of school pizza party. I was getting nervous that they weren't going to breakout before the timer went off, but it worked out.
53:42 - Peggy George
hooray Patti!!!

55:03 - Kg
@Paula: Thanks for the red herring angle...I appreciate the extra info.
55:39 - Peggy George
thanks a lot Patti!!!
56:03 - @plnaugle (Paula)
I find I get great ideas for clues by watching the setup videos that other teachers have created.
56:08 - Kati Searcy 2
I've done with students and also teachers. Teachers really need to experience it first. Also, at the elementary level, de-briefing is essential because they get very emotional if they do not break out.
56:40 - Peggy George
thanks for that advice Kati!!
56:56 - Peggy George
Hooray Louise!! You're next :-)
57:38 - Peggy George
these tips are so helpful Paula!!
57:59 - Kati Searcy 2
For the very young students, before you do the breakout, let them just play with the different types of locks so they can see how they work
57:59 - Peggy George
hahahaha! that is hilarious!!
58:23 - @plnaugle (Paula)
So excited that Louise is sharing with us. :)
58:32 - Peggy George
Louise has presented for us before! Always great when she can join us!
58:35 - Mark Moran
I did the same thing! I once did an Escape the Room with my wife and kids. I felt so useless that I was thrilled when I found three new bags to search through. My wife shouted, "those are out pocketbooks!"
58:42 - Patti Harju 1
:)
58:49 - Peggy George
that's so funny Mark!!
58:51 - @jackiegerstein
A good classroom = one in which when someone enters, they have difficulty finding the front of the room.
59:02 - Mark Moran
Great quote, Jackie!
59:07 - @jackiegerstein
Thanks, Mark
59:09 - Peggy George
loving these middle school examples!
