Encouragement in the Classroom!!!!
00:18 - Carolyn Stanley
It's amazing how many times those negative comments can wound and be played over and over in our minds. It's so important for teachers to be careful their comments are not misunderstood.

09:20 - Amanda 2

09:27 - Peggy George

09:50 - @careeson
I'm Clarissa and I teach 3rd grade all subjects.
09:55 - Amanda 2

10:14 - Peggy George
time is always the big barrier for teachers!
10:21 - Peggy George
Hi Louise! Great to see you!
10:24 - @mrsmorgansclass - Louise
Late to the party. Sorry.
10:41 - @plnaugle (Paula)
Hi Louise. :)
10:43 - Peggy George
too often when we reflect on our day we remember what went wrong rather than what went right!
10:58 - @mrsmorgansclass - Louise
hi Paula.
11:28 - @careeson
It's so important to reflect on our teaching so that we can pinpoint what's happening in the room at the time they are all engaged.
11:35 - Peggy George
how often each day should you ask students to reflect on how their day is going? after each class? end of day?
11:43 - @plnaugle (Paula)
Having class celebrations at the end of each class is a great way to reflect on positives.
11:53 - Peggy George
those transition times are definitely challenging!
12:10 - Peggy George
Hi clinds!! Welcome!
12:35 - Peggy George
great idea!
12:57 - @careeson
I like to have a class discussion on what went well and what we could change to improve the next time
12:58 - @plnaugle (Paula)
I'm using http://gonoodle.com for fun brain breaks. It is great to see the kids dancing, laughing, and enjoying the movements.
13:02 - Peggy George
so many class rules are what not to do...
13:22 - Peggy George

17:14 - @plnaugle (Paula)
I was having a hard time keeping a very positive attitude, but I made it through. I've had 38 students since school started on August 8. We finally will be adding a new 4th grade teacher on Monday. Phew! I'll have 27 next week.

what a big smile!!
17:56 - @janwells
WOW, Paula......so thankful for a new teacher coming on board
18:37 - Peggy George
I agree Amanda! Also cafeteria issues both during breakfast and lunch. I also found that the school bus drivers and crossing guards effect how the day starts for students.
18:40 - @mrsmorgansclass - Louise
yeah. We have that too. I have mixed feelings.
19:15 - @plnaugle (Paula)
@Jan it has been a challenging beginning for sure. Thank goodness the students have been very good for the most part.
19:21 - @mrsmorgansclass - Louise
Using class dojo to give positive feedback for positive actions.
19:24 - @careeson
When my students come in to class and I notice someone who looks like they've had a rough morning I have them do brain drain. They take out their notebooks and for one minute drain their brain of what ever they need to clear out. Seems to help them move on with their day.
19:25 - Peggy George
GoNoodle (movement and brain breaks) https://www.gonoodle.com/
19:35 - Peggy George
great list!!!
19:45 - Peggy George
do you have anything you would add to that list?
20:10 - Peggy George
Routines and Rituals
Movement
Music
Novelty
Spontaneity
Time dedicated to exploration of fascination
20:34 - Peggy George
what a fantastic idea Careeson!!!
20:52 - @plnaugle (Paula)
Our drama students do the school-wide morning announcements. They always end with jokes and riddles.
21:21 - Carolyn Stanley
Kids love feeling important and useful.
21:26 - Peggy George
have you heard that story about the "troubles tree" where the man stops at the tree and hangs his troubles on it before he enters the house? Always loved that image!
21:28 - Amanda 2
Love this job idea! We have a class jobs/class cash system and this would be a great addition to our list.
22:04 - Peggy George
what are some of the strategies you use to get kids back after a particularly rowdy activity?
22:34 - Carolyn Stanley
17 students - nice class size
22:41 - Peggy George
music has so many great uses in the classroom! many teachers use it to transition activities
22:51 - Peggy George
hahaha!!! you counted them? :-)
23:24 - Peggy George
Dr. Jean's chants are fantastic for regrouping kids!

Calming chime sounds online - http://bit.ly/1kRVdOY
23:51 - @careeson
I like to pull them close after a rowdy activity. Usually we move the rug and I to them. They love being read to and I love the calmness it brings.
23:57 - Peggy George
thanks Paula!!!
24:32 - Peggy George
super @Careeson! Kids really pick up on your emotional state :-)
25:21 - Peggy George
even though clap, clap, clap always works... :-) so true that variety is good so they have to keep listening
25:37 - @careeson
I agree music is an essential tool to use in the class. So many benefits.
25:50 - Peggy George
accents are so much fun!!! so are puppets!!!
25:53 - @careeson
I agree Joan about the accents!
26:45 - Peggy George
what does the research say about how often we should change the activity in a classroom? every 15 minutes?
27:02 - Peggy George
that would give some teachers/admins nightmares...
27:16 - Peggy George
even though it's a great idea!
27:17 - @careeson
I teach Morphology with different singing. Some weeks it's opera, country, or rock and roll. They look forward to Thursday's Morphology lessons!
27:29 - stace 3
do these strategies work for those challenging teen years

28:14 - Renee Redmond
Hi!
28:19 - Peggy George
I wonder about that Natalie because I've heard something similar about adult learning :-)
28:21 - Carolyn Stanley
I worked primarily with grade 7 and8 - only saw kids for 42 minute blocks
28:51 - Cindy Medeiros
I think the chimes would work for teens, or use rap music
28:51 - Peggy George
did you have the students bring in photos for that board?
29:05 - Peggy George
they would love that!!
29:48 - Peggy George
that happens so often!! outstanding teachers get all of the challenging students!
30:07 - Cindy Medeiros
Sounds like Genius hour
30:09 - @shamblesguru (Thailand iPad)
One day desktops will be interactive touch screens .…err .…there will be no desks .…what do you think?
30:20 - Peggy George
it does sound similar :-) but I love the name
30:31 - Natalie McKalip
I usually switch activities three times during my middle school art lessons. My students are required to move for multiple reasons during each period.
30:45 - Peggy George
so true Shamblesguru and already happening in some classrooms but not the norm
31:03 - Peggy George
I love those whiteboard desks :-)
31:23 - Peggy George
that picture would generate a lot of conversation!!!
31:33 - @careeson

Good point Peggy!
33:56 - @plnaugle (Paula)
@careeson I found this one in my Google Docs - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_GYsAwyncwNLWk1MnhxZjQ0Q3dWYVdxR2xwNUZvMlNLYVhj/edit

Grammar Funnies from Grammarly http://www.pinterest.com/grammarly/humor/
34:14 - Amanda 2
Definitely. I like the idea of modeling laughing at your own mistakes- hard to convince a student to laugh at his/her mistake if he/she is serious, embarrassed, so doing it yourself is huge
34:19 - Peggy George
Grammarly pinterest board is in the Livebinder
34:24 - Natalie McKalip
Thanks for that link.
35:16 - @careeson
Thanks Paula
35:33 - Peggy George
love that idea! when they see the pictures it will really help them to share their feelings
35:34 - Tina S 2
Like that tip - as a parent too
35:40 - Renee Redmond

yike issues with my chat skills
43:02 - @shamblesguru (Thailand iPad)
Do you think this is a cultural issue …would it be a different conversation if working with. UK or Thai teachers? .…question for the end
43:32 - Tina S 2
Good question !
44:03 - Karen L @klirenmsn
Our saying has been "Brush it off" to get read of the yucky feelings you have when someone says something that hurts you
44:10 - @shamblesguru (Thailand iPad)
or a different conversation is different nationalities in your classroom
44:17 - @shamblesguru (Thailand iPad)
If
44:32 - Peggy George
those photos capture so many great memories and experiences!
44:51 - Peggy George
brush it off is a great phrase!

46:48 - Tina S 2
That's was more - a question of encouraging transparency
46:54 - Minelle
Great session. Thank you!
47:07 - stidmama
This was really helpful -- my third graders are starting to get comfortable (end of the "honeymoon") and we are going to need a lot of these ideas!
47:14 - Carolyn Stanley
This was so inspiring. Thank you, Joan.
47:15 - Radojka
Thank you!
47:19 - Tina S 2
Ooh like 'normalizing ' emotions
47:26 - Tina S 2
Yes!
47:28 - @plnaugle (Paula)
One teacher I know has a mirror on her door at children's eye level. They have to check their emotion (face) as they enter the room.
47:31 - Peggy George
look how many problems have come from thinking "real men don't cry"!!
47:47 - Dejan Kreculj #2
Thank you !

Love the what is your sentence as a strategy for teens
48:51 - @careeson
Thank you for sharing so many terrific ideas this morning.
49:47 - Tina S 2
Thank you Joan - I'm bringing this into my home with 2 teenagers who might be facing 'possibly' a stressful year...
50:03 - Cindy Medeiros
Yes, they are all individuals
50:21 - Peggy George
I love that mirror idea Paula for checking own faces as they enter the room. Sometimes we're not aware that we have a frown on our face...
50:35 - Carolyn Stanley
Classroom 2.0 delivers the best PD you can find.
50:46 - Peggy George
thanks Carolyn! :-)
50:53 - Amanda 2
Love the mirror idea- I think I need that, too, to make sure I'm not guilty of the same thing we're asking students not to do! :)
51:16 - Bobby Song
Would you put the mirror on the outside of door?
51:16 - Peggy George
that's exactly what I was thinking Amanda!
51:22 - stace 3
school can be stressful especially the adolescent years...teens need to tap into some of these strategies but teachers need to know how to bring them to the students
51:35 - Peggy George
any other questions???
51:51 - Tina S 2
Loved it Joan!
51:53 - stidmama
This has been so helpful -- thank you for this!
